Esta vez participa Mary Ellen O’Connell, una profesora de derecho internacional especialista en uso de la fuerza, con posiciones muy claras e interesantes sobre los temas más actuales de la disciplina, como el uso de vehículos no tripulados en la lucha contra el terrorismo y tantos otros temas. Interesante conferencia organizada por Gerry Simpson y Kevin Jon Heller de la Escuela de Derecho de la Universidad de Melbourne que procura favorecer un enfoque pluralista, genuinamente interdisciplinario, sobre uno de los juicios más influyentes del siglo XX en el año de su cincuenta aniversario. La convocatoria incluye propuestas de artículos para el libro que ha de surgir de la conferencia, aun por autores que no puedan concurrir, y está abierta a estudiantes de doctorado. On 11 April 1961, the trial of Adolf Eichmann began in the District Court of Jerusalem. The trial was broadcast internationally, the first televised trial in the history of television, drawing millions of viewers around the world. Eight months later, after the testimony of nearly 100 witnesses had changed perceptions of the Holocaust forever, the court convicted Eichmann and sentenced him to death. Five months after that, Eichmann was hanged and his ashes were scattered at sea, bringing to a close one of the most important trials of the 20th century.
2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the Eichmann trial. The trial has had a profound impact on a variety of academic disciplines – law, philosophy, literary theory, political science, and history, to name only a few – yet scholars in those disciplines have rarely interacted with each other. The goal of symposium is to bridge that gap by bringing together scholars who have nothing in common other than a shared interest in the trial. The organizers thus encourage proposals from any discipline on any topic related to Eichmann.
The symposium will be held over two days. We regret we cannot offer travel or accommodation expenses, but lunches and teas (morning and afternoon) will be provided. A speakers’ dinner will be held on the evening of the 14th and an informal dinner on the 15th for those who remain in town.
The symposium is the third of four symposia being held as part of the Australian Research Council-funded project “Invoking Humanity: A History of War Crimes Trials.” The organizers intend to publish a selection of papers presented at the symposium as an edited book, although there will be no obligation to publish. Conversely, the organizers are happy to consider contributions to the book from scholars who are unable to attend the symposium.
If you are interested in presenting a paper at the symposium or contributing to the planned book, please send a 300-500 word abstract and a short C.V. no later than 15 June 2011 to Kevin Jon Heller, c/o Cathy Hutton, the APCML Administrator (c.hutton@ unimelb.edu.au). Doctoral students are welcome to submit abstracts. Participants will be selected by July 1 to facilitate travel plans.

La semana próxima, el 4 y 5 de mayo, la Revista Jurídica de la UAM celebra sus XI Jornadas de estudio y discusión. Esta vez están dedicadas a la “Crisis en el mundo árabe: trayectorias políticas y constitucionales”. Por cierto, si no lo hecho ya, les recomiendo leer y escribir en la RJUAM. Tiene muchos contenidos de derecho internacional y están volcados generosamente en la red. Entre los artículos de derecho internacional hay análisis de derecho internacional general, económico, penal, marítimo, etcétera. Por poner un par de ejemplos y abrir el apetito, les recomiendo un excelente artículo de Lluís Paradell Trius, » La precariedad del Derecho Internacional en los Estados Unidos«, que apareció en el número 2 de la RJUAM (2000), con un análisis certero y duradero, como se ha podido comprobar luego en casos paradigmáticos, como el caso Medellín v Texas (2008) del Tribunal Supremo de EE.UU. O este otro artículo aparecido en el número 3 de la RJUAM (200) del profesor Meinhard. HILF, «¿Libertad del comercio mundial contra protección del medio ambiente?». O este estudio de la profesora Laurence BURGORGUE-LARSEN, «Las víctimas del delito en el proceso penal internacional: el ejemplo de la Corte Penal Internacional» en el número 12 de la RJUAM (2005). Seminario sobre «Protección de mujeres migrantes en situación de especial vulnerabilidad»

«Los próximos 7 y 8 de junio se celebrará en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Salón de Grados del Campus de Getafe) un Seminario sobre «Protección de mujeres migrantes en situación de especial vulnerabilidad». En el mismo se analizarán, desde una perspectiva jurídica, las principales cuestiones que plantea la protección de este colectivo frente a todas las formas de violencia asociada a la condición del mujer migrante. La participación en sus sesiones de representantes de la Academia, la Sociedad Civil y la Administración aportará puntos de vista diferentes y necesariamente complementarios en torno a dichas cuestiones. La conferencia inaugural del Seminario correra a cargo del Prof. Jorge Bustamente, Relator Especial de Naciones Unidas sobre los derechos humanos de los migrantes.
Todos/as aquellos/as que estén interesados/as podrán presentar una Comunicación, que deberá centrarse en alguna de las cuestiones objeto de análisis durante el Seminario:1) LA PROTECCIÓN INTERNACIONAL DE LOS DERECHOS DE LAS MUJERES MIGRANTES.

Antes del viernes 3 de junio se comunicará a los autores si las mismas han sido aceptadas. La presentanción de las comunicaciones tendrá lugar el martes, 7 de junio, durante la Sesión de la tarde.

International Law and Feminist Futures Workshop

Registration is now open for the International Law and Feminist Futures workshop to be held at the University of Leicester on Thursday 28th April 2011.
Under the new European Society of International Law (ESIL) Feminism and International Law interest group, the International Law and Feminist Futures workshop will bring together individuals committed to feminist approaches in order to share and develop their research, generate ideas for future events and collaborations and to consider what contribution feminist analysis can make to the future of international law.
The keynote address will be given by Professor Dianne Otto, University of Melbourne, who will speak on ‘The Paradoxes of Feminist Engagement with International Law’.

Hasta el próximo día 10 de abril está abierto el plazo para presentar propuestas de comunicación para el I Congreso internacional UAM de Derecho de la UE. Últimas tendencias en la jurisprudencia del TJUE (2008-2011). El Congreso, estructurado en dos conferencias y ocho paneles especializados, pretende constituir un foro de debate y análisis crítico de los pronunciamientos más recientes del Tribunal de Luxemburgo. Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. (EDT-Boston)This Live Seminar will examine the modalities through which (elements of) the international community may respond to the ongoing crisis in Libya. Amid reports of violence, refugee and IDP flows, and other forms of instability, this Live Seminar will address the following questions:
- How may the situation be qualified under international law, and what legal and policy consequences result from such a qualification?
- What tactical and strategic dilemmas arise for the international community, especially in terms of prevention and mitigation of civilian harm?
- What legal and policy frameworks provide a basis through which the international community may respond to the situation in order to repress violations?
These questions will be examined by reference to the complex crisis in Libya.
